Standards
Optical Network Engineering follows closely the evolution of standards and componentry offered for FTTH (Fibre to the Home) networks.
There is a choice currently between the ITU standard: GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks), the IEEE standard: EPON (Ethernet-based PON) and Point-to-Point Active Ethernet (P2P).
Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Currently in New Zealand GPON is being deployed as the preferred standard by Telecom New Zealand, the country's biggest Telco.
New standards are being prepared to increase data transmission speeds, such as Course and Dense Wave Division Mulitplexing (CWDM and DWDM).
At Optical Network Engineering we carefully track the adoption and evolution of the various options with FTTH networks.
